新风系统能够通过合理的设计，使进风和回风形成空气室内外循环，从而实现真正的闭窗通风无死角。而空气净化器一般放在房间角落，对空气的处理面积不如新风系统大，多多少少会有死角空气难以被净化到，而且面积越大，空气净化器净化效果越差。一般而言空气净化器只适合用在几十平米的区域。

新风系统中比较流行的全热交换器具有热回收功能，能够在换气同时把排出的污浊空气的温度和湿度留下来，转移到进入室内的干净空气上，使室内气温和湿度维持在恒定的水平，舒适节能。尤其与空调或者暖气同时使用时，全热交换器的节能效果更为显著，而空气净化器是不具备这个功能的。

这大概是空气净化器唯一能打败新风系统的地方，因为新风系统只能在装修前安装，比起空气净化器的安装限制大很多，因为管道需要穿墙打孔。不过现在很多知名品牌都推出了壁挂式新风机，安装方便许多，没有了必须在装修前安装的限制，空气净化器这一唯一优势也逐渐消失了。
